Change order

A change order is a written amendment to a construction contract that adds, removes, or modifies scope and adjusts the price accordingly.

Change orders are normal — every custom home generates some. They become a problem when the original specification was vague enough that the buyer didn't realize they were paying extra for things they assumed were included.

The best protection against runaway change orders is a thorough up-front specification. The second-best protection is a contract that requires written approval and pricing before any change is executed.
